| SAE Baja is a vehicle design competition with emphasis on off-road capability. The entry is centered around a Briggs and Stratton 10 hp gasoline engine. The car must be designed and constructed to endure such off-road events as rock fields, fallen logs and telephone poles, muddy trenches, off-camber terrain, sled pulls and hill climbs. The pinnacle of the competition is a grueling and exciting four hour endurance race where all 130 teams are on the motocross-style track at the same time! While competing for the maximum number of laps during this race, the teams are constantly bumping and punting each other off course, as well as trying to dive-bomb into the corners for better position! For this reason, safety is taken very seriously and is at the forefront of the vehicle’s design. If you have time and are interested in learning about all-terrain motorized vehicle development, stop by the shop and find out how you can get involved! No previous automotive experience is required. All we ask is that you're willing to get dirty and have a good time!
Unfortunately, for the first time in our team’s history, Gator Motorsports is not currently designing and manufacturing a Baja car. Due to financial challenges facing our team and sponsors, we have been forced to focus our efforts on one project. Since the formula project currently has more student interest, we have decided to focus on that project this season. We encourage any students interested in Baja to get involved with the Formula project for the ’09-‘10 season. Just like the Baja program, the Formula program will teach you the fundamentals of design, manufacturing, testing and presentation, which can be plugged into the Baja program when we have the resources to resume it. Thank you for your interest!
